Objective

To ideate, design and develop a way for users to "scan" their wardrobe in a way that tags each piece by its features and allows the user to create unique combinations with the pieces of clothing they own.

Features

  1. Digitization of Wardrobes: Whering was designed to let users digitize their entire wardrobe, providing a streamlined and accessible online styling tool​​. This initiative was started in June 2020 to address the challenges in the fashion experience, such as impulse buying and lack of styling inspiration​​.
  2. Digital Inventory and Outfit Planning: The app aids in visual memory by allowing users to 'shop their own wardrobe', thereby identifying what they really need and unlocking various outfit combinations. It also features tools for tracking wears and most worn items, and for creating different versions of popular looks​​.
  3. Machine Learning for Personalized Styling: Utilizing machine learning, Whering offers tailored styling suggestions, enabling users to view their wardrobe in new ways and receive outfit ideas they might not have thought of previously​​.
  4. Sustainable Fashion Focus: A key mission is to extend the lifecycle of clothes and reduce the carbon and water footprint of consumers. This is achieved by tracking wears and most worn items, and promoting the repetition of outfits. The app plans to introduce an impact dashboard for users to understand the environmental impact of their purchasing decisions​​.
  5. Subscription and Free Services: Whering operates a free service named 'Whering Essentials' and a subscription service 'Whering VIP'. The free service includes tools for creating unlimited outfits and a 'Dress Me' function, while the VIP service offers additional features like a calendar, weather integration, Moodboard, and Wishlist features​​.
  6. Expansion into Social Features and Marketplace: Plans include making the app social, allowing users to share and swap items, and onboarding new brands and designers for a hyper-personalized shopping experience. This includes partnerships with brands like Rotaro for resale/rental pieces​​.

Results

  1. User Growth: As of 2023, Whering has attracted over 2 million users, indicating significant growth and user adoption​​.
  2. Awards and Media Recognition: Recognised by BBC, Forbes, Vogue and several other media. Also obtained several startup and entrepreneurship recognitions in its launch hub of London.
  3. Future Plans and Development: Whering continues to expand its features and partnerships, aiming to further personalize the shopping experience and integrate sustainable fashion practices into its platform. This ongoing development indicates a robust and evolving business model.
